Book summary from the publisher:
Paris, at the dawn of the modern age:
Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride―or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia―the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion!
Sebastian’s secret weapon is his brilliant dressmaker, Frances―his best friend and one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect her friend?
Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart.
My Thoughts:
This graphic novel is simply adorable without being overly simple. The full-color illustrations are charming and the story is sweet, encouraging, and empowering. Prince Sebastian and Frances are both determined to be true to themselves, even when it puts them at odds with others and involves taking big risks. While not explicitly an LGBTQIA+ story, Sebastian explores and rejects a binary view of gender and Frances is loving and accepting. The ending is the icing on the cake, with his parents celebrating Sebastian's choices and publicly embracing him and his alter-ego. It's also delightful to see how Frances stands up for her own dreams and makes them a reality. This book proves that love isn't about sacrificing yourself or your plans but instead about wanting the best for the person you love and encouraging them to be true to themselves.
Programming ideas:
Print comic/graphic novel templates and encourage students to create their own twist on a fairy tale through art and words.
Gather other books where characters reject the "norm" or express themselves in creative and authentic ways. Have students choose two to compare and contrast.
Print dress and clothing templates and allow students to draw and color their most creative fashion ideas to be displayed.
Create a dream board where students can anonymously write their own aspirations or what they'd like to change or do to be true to themselves.
